For many of us, a suitcase is a simple travel accessory. But for the residential clients at Central Wyoming Counseling Center (CWCC), it symbolizes hope, dignity and a fresh start. Each January, CWCC holds an annual luggage drive to collect new or gently used luggage and duffle bags for clients graduating from inpatient treatment. This initiative aims to provide more than just a practical way to carry belongings — it offers a way to carry hope into their new lives.
The Need for Dignity in Recovery
Clients often arrive at CWCC with little to no personal belongings, sometimes carrying their items in garbage bags. As they transition out of treatment and back into their communities, the importance of having proper luggage cannot be overstated. A suitcase represents more than just storage; it’s a tangible sign of the respect and dignity they deserve as they embark on a new journey.
“Clients often start residential treatment with nothing to their name,” says Moriah Jones, a residential technician at CWCC. “If they need a suitcase when they graduate, that means they are collecting essential items they need to start their recovery journey.”
“Leaving treatment with your belongings in a garbage bag can be a dehumanizing experience,” adds Residential Technician Candice Hultman. “Our goal is to ensure that every client leaves feeling valued and prepared, both emotionally and practically. Providing luggage is a small yet impactful way to support their recovery and reintegration.”
How the Community Can Help
CWCC is calling on the community to support this important cause by donating new or gently used carry-on-sized hard-sided luggage, duffel bags and backpacks. Donations can be dropped off at CWCC’s front desk during normal business hours.
“We’re grateful for the generosity of our community,” says Kayla Pivik, a residential clinician at CWCC. “A suitcase is symbolic as a journey for which they embark on in their newly recovered lives. Every piece of luggage donated is a step towards empowering our clients and showing them that their community supports their recovery.”
The Luggage Drive is happening now through Jan. 31, 2025.
